Today, I watched G.D.N. and discovered the remarkable story of Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu, popularly remembered as the “Edison of India.” I was surprised that I knew so little about this extraordinary Indian innovator, industrialist and educator. His limited formal education did not prevent him from experimenting across electrical engineering, automobiles, agriculture and manufacturing. His life shows that curiosity, practical intelligence and determination can sometimes achieve what conventional qualifications cannot.
The film also portrays his confrontations with the authorities, including serious tax disputes. Historical accounts should distinguish between a disagreement with the colonial administration and treating non-payment of tax as something to celebrate. What impressed me was his fearlessness—not mindlessness—and his refusal to allow powerful systems to suppress his independent thinking. His story reminds us that innovators require not only intelligence but also courage, discipline and the strength to question established limitations.
G. D. Naidu contributed to industrial development and technical education at a time when India needed indigenous capability. Yet many Indians, including me until today, have not heard enough about him. Our younger generation should learn about such pioneers because national progress is created not only by political leaders, but also by scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, teachers and institution-builders.
After watching this film, my personal takeaway is simple: India has produced many extraordinary minds whose stories remain insufficiently known. Cinema can serve a valuable purpose when it encourages us to study these personalities more deeply. I am grateful that G.D.N. introduced me to this fearless and inventive Indian. His journey deserves to be remembered, discussed and shared.
